Course work FINAL!!!

THE FINAL COURSEWORK!!!

After spending around 2+ months on my final coursework, this is it! There are indeed some challenges faced. I guess the biggest challenge is to be to paint the faces of people of the different age groups. The tones of the faces are rather hard to depict as I spent a long time trying to make the faces seem to be more realistic and 3D. The facial expressions are really hard to capture with oil paintings. However, I an glad that I manage to do my best. :)

These paintings are all 50 by 50 cm. Although it is not very big, it took me a lot of time to finish it. I guess the other challenge I faced is time management. I spent too much time trying to paint the faces, and in the end, I have to finish the other parts of the paintings in a rush.

  1. I like the idea behind the theme of growing up and aging, especially, the canvas on adulthood, where the man is practically overwhelmed and with work load and stress. I agree that painting faces are the hardest as they are what we are most familiar with. The final two stages of life seems rather depressing though. Perhaps more shadows could be added to the teen's and the baby's face to make it more 3-D.

  2. hello!
same as lin hui, i like your idea of people aging the the how the lifestyle changes. i think you have wisely choose the objects for different stages of life. such as the teenage life people only care about social life and surfing the internet, while as they grow older, they start to experience the social pressure. also, its good that you have take note of the change in facial features as people aged.
also, you might want to consider having different background colour for the different stages of life? as you have the grey background for all the paintings (except the third one), it makes the series look a bit plain. maybe you can choose a brighter colour as background for the baby stage and a gradual darker background for the people aged.

  3. yoyoyoyo!

actually my initial idea is very similar to yours :D i was thinking about how we each face different problems in our different stages of life, like students and exams, adults and economy, elderly and death. but mine was focusing on more about why people are unhappy with life, something like that.

i think you did well painting the facial expressions :) at least a lot better than what i did for the "nanyang" oil painting project last year :S

i like how the colours seem to fade as the people go through each stage in life. like the baby stage with colourful blocks, and the last stage with black and white obituary. but i feel that it can be exaggerated more? like even more colours for the first stage? to make it even more cheerful :D
